About BusyKiwi
Making useful things, solving problems and having a yarn along the way.
Hi, I'm David, the guy behind BusyKiwi.
BusyKiwi is a name I've been using since the early 2000s, originally as a nickname and username online. It's been around for a long time, but these days it's grown into something more.
BusyKiwi is now the name behind the things I make and build here in Hamilton, NZ. The focus is pretty simple: practical, creative and affordable stuff that people can actually use.
How It Started
Before COVID, my partner, Cherie, who operates Ree's Books, asked me to make a mud kitchen for a friend.
Like a lot of people, I had to admit I didn't really know what a mud kitchen was, so I did a bit of research.
What I found was a market sitting at two extremes: expensive, professionally made options, and basic pallet-style versions.
I thought there had to be a middle ground. Something well built, practical, affordable and made to last.
So I built one.
Over time, the kids have taught me plenty about making Mud Kitchens. They've also provided the best feedback possible: seeing the excitement, imagination and smiles when they get stuck into playing.
That makes all the time and effort worthwhile.
That first mud kitchen led to more, and before long, BusyKiwi had grown into more than just Mud Kitchens.
What I Make
These days I make things for kids, families, schools, early learning centres, market vendors and small businesses.
That includes Mud Kitchens, Builders Benches, market display stands, sandwich boards and other practical projects.
I enjoy making things that solve a problem, especially when there's a bit of creativity involved.
I also like seeing things I've made still being used years later. I recently found the first market display stand I made, back around 2014. It was still going strong until its owner retired in 2026.
That was a pretty good reminder that building something properly can make a difference.
A Bit More About Me
I'm a small, hands-on Kiwi business, so I'm happy to work with people rather than trying to make every idea fit a standard product.
Sometimes there's something ready to go. Other times someone has an idea and asks:
"Can you make this?"
If you've got an idea, I'm always happy to have a yarn and see what we can come up with.
Disclaimer from Cherie: he will talk a hind leg off a donkey.
